Zephaniah: What’s Worth Preserving?

The short book of Zephaniah deals with a critical time in Israel’s history. Jerusalem had become as corrupt as the surrounding nations. God’s dealings would seem harsh, but would ultimately lead to renewal, and a preservation of those who’ve been faithful. All this would lead to a powerful fulfillment of Genesis 12, God’s promise to bless all nations through Abraham’s family.

As we continue our study of Baptism, we see the importance of God as Trinity being a model for Christian life, love, and community. God’s nature and actions are mysterious yet inspiring, inviting us always to be knowing God more.

Habakkuk: The Complexity of True Justice

Habakkuk does something different. Rather than approach the people on behalf of God, he approaches God on behalf of the people. Evil persists in the world. For how long? What will God do? God’s answer to his question is challenging. Even so, the righteous must live by faith.

Yes to God

This lesson begins the next section of our study of Baptism. When a person is baptized, what are they doing? How is God responding? What exactly is happening? First and foremost, when we are baptized, we are saying “YES!” to God, to God’s plan for us, and to God’s power to bring all things together for good.

Nahum: The Fullness of Time and the Justice of God

Our study of the minor prophets brings us to Nahum, the second minor prophet to speak directly to Nineveh. But unlike the time of Jonah, the city is unrepentant and will be confronted with the holy, powerful God of Israel.

Upon his baptism, Jesus was tested. His character flowed from his thoughts and his actions. When we wear his name as “Christians” our lives should give similar evidence of whom it is that we serve.

Micah: Obstacles to Being Upright

In this class, we continue our study of the Minor Prophets: Turn and Return with a look at Micah. Preaching to Southerners during a time of affluence, he challenges people not to allow material prosperity to drive a wedge between them and God. He describes a clear vision of the future that will involve correction, but also great blessings.

Washed

In this lesson, we take a walk along the Jordan River. We discover people whom God has met in the past wish show us now in the present what happens when we come to the water, turn to God for healing and safety, and commit our lives to God’s purposes.

Jonah: God’s Amazing Mercy

We continue our study of the Minor Prophets with Jonah, the “turn-around” prophet. Looking at contrasts between Jonah, God, Sailors, and the people of Nineveh, we are challenged to look within at our own hesitance to see others experience the same grace upon which we ourselves depend.

Safe in the Savior

The Passover was the greatest act of grace that God ever performed…until Jesus accomplished the ultimate sacrifice on the Cross, and the victory over death in his resurrection. Today we look at the deep roots of Baptism in the Passover itself, and its ongoing significance for us as people whom God has redeemed, and invited to our true home.
