An important companion for life is personified in Proverbs as Lady Wisdom. She offers great promise to those who learn to listen, but she will show no sympathy for those who have scorned her free offer of insight. Proverbs invites us to accept God’s free offer of guidance and help.

It is important to treat others as you want to be treated, because when you harm others, you ultimately end up harming yourself. This lesson from Proverbs 1 is about the importance of choosing good companions, because your companions may well determine your destiny.

You cannot know the best way to live in the world if you don’t understand your proper place within it. In this first lesson on the book of Proverbs, Mark Adams expounds on the “fear of the Lord” as the true beginning point of a life well lived.

Jesus is our everything from beginning to end. Without him, nothing that has been made would have been made. As our creator, he also has every claim on what our purpose ought to be. God is most glorified in us when we live up to our intended purpose of finding satisfaction in him.

Though he was equal with God, Jesus did not come to us in a way that exploited his power. He came to us as a child, in need of our hospitality. We see in the stories surrounding his birth that to be “favored” by God can have unique challenges, but also incredible blessings.

Jesus teaches us by his own example what kind of people we are to be. He wants us to become like children, eager to know him, not too puffed up with self-importance, and willing to acknowledge how much we need him. Jesus invites us into the light, and he shows us a better path that leads to brighter places.

As we journey through “Glimpses of the Savior”, we talk this week about how God filled every role that we needed him to fill, and did the thing for us that no one else could.

God’s relentless compassion for Nineveh confuses Jonah. But God’s relentless compassion for Jonah can redeem him. Ultimately, Jesus became God’s prophet to a hostile people and endured harshness that Jonah imagined, but was spared from experiencing. Jonah’s story ends with a question, leaving it up to us to answer, “Will I show the same compassion for others that God has shown to me?”
