How could Paul speak confidently of God’s “rescue” even as he prepared to die? This is the conundrum of 2 Timothy. It is a book of great hope set against terrible circumstances. What do we expect from this life? What drives us toward our goals? All of this comes into focus in our passage for this week.
When it seems that God is taking a long time, it’s easy for us to give up and get distracted. Peter encourages us that we need to look at God’s movements in history and in our life through the right lens: God’s patience. If what we long for is Christ’s return, we hasten it through helping others arrive at a place of repentance.

Ephesians 2:10
In Christ, we don’t merely go from ok people to better people. Our faith is a matter of God taking what was dead and making us both alive and flourishing. God prepares good things for us, and He prepares us for good things. We continue our Words of Life series with this study of Ephesians 2:10.

The second question in our series, Your Life In Focus. What are the relationships that I ought to build? The companions we have in life are so much of what define our sense of happiness and purpose. How do we make sure we are including the people who will help us the most in becoming the person God wants us to be?

Today we meditate on Psalm 139. In reminding us of the all-encompassing presence of God, we are invited to live intentionally, to love boldly, to embrace God’s purpose for us, yet to remain open to God’s continued direction.

As we reach the conclusion of Abraham’s story in this life, we see that God’s promises for his life are only getting started. We need to connect our life to something bigger than ourself. Abraham’s prayerful pursuit of a wife for Isaac reminds us of how dearly we also need faithful companions for our journey.

Abraham’s family reached a breaking point. Fortunately, God was there to help all of them pick up the pieces. In our own families, the desire is NOT to get to that point, but to solve our solvable problems. We’ll share some ways to work on that together.

Abraham’s nephew was living among cities that had grown too wicked to be allowed to continue. God’s justice and compassion for the vulnerable compelled him to act. But even in this process, Abraham became an advocate for mercy. We discover that God’s ultimate plan is for righteousness to override evil, and for mercy to win out over guilt. Righteousness is vital, because it leads to salvation.

Sometimes laughter comes from a place of joy and good humor. Sometimes it arises from surprise in the middle of difficulty. At the announcement that their son would be arriving withing the next year, Abraham and Sarah couldn’t help but laugh. Their good news is also our good news, that God always keeps his promises.
